Mascara is unusual among the categories we manufacture — color-shift pigment is not the primary formula, it's a second layer applied over a conventional base.
Volumizing, lengthening, or waterproof — black remains roughly 82% of color preference industry-wide, so this is almost always the foundation layer.
A second formula, applied over the base coat, carrying fine-milled effect pigment at low loading for a shimmer or angle-dependent color-shift finish.
Applicator design (bristle density, wand shape) is quoted alongside the formula — a major factor in how any formula, base or topper, actually performs on lashes.
Mascara relies on a wax/polymer film to coat and hold lash shape. Heavy pigment loading — the amount needed for a strong color-shift effect — breaks down that film, causing flaking and poor curl retention. This is a hard formulation constraint, not a style choice.
Eye-area safety limits mascara to fine-milled grades only — Grade O-1 (4-9μm) per the LFL Particle Grade Standard. Coarser grades that work well in eyeshadow are not appropriate here.
