Two technical reasons: (1) PIGMENT: Regular nail polish contains <1% pigments (PMC11991789, 2025). Stamping involves two transfer steps (plate→stamper→nail), each losing ~50-60% of the polish applied. Starting at <1% leaves near-invisible designs. Stamping polish at 5-15% pigment maintains visible color through both transfers. (2) VISCOSITY: Regular polish is formulated to be thin enough for smooth brush application on nails — but that same thin consistency means it runs out of plate grooves and cannot be cleanly scraped. It also dries too slowly in the plate (pools) or too quickly (dries before you can stamp). Stamping polish has precisely engineered thixotropic viscosity: thick at rest (holds in grooves), thin under scraper shear, recovers quickly on stamper. The transfer window is 5-15 seconds — the time between scraping the plate and the polish becoming too dry to transfer. It's controlled by the solvent evaporation rate. Stamping polish typically uses a balanced blend of fast-evaporating solvents (ethyl acetate, BP=77°C) and slower-evaporating solvents (butyl acetate, BP=126°C). The ratio determines how quickly the surface of the polish on the plate begins to "skin over" — forming a slightly tacky layer that picks up on the silicone stamper.
